What follows covers the questions that come up most. ------------------------------------------------------------------ WHAT IS STUDIOLO? ----------------- Fifteen shelves, seventy-six books, and one capstone for each shelf that a professor reads and grades against a fixed rubric. There is no schedule, no page target and no term. You mark a book when you finish it, and a shelf closes when its books are marked. It is not a credential. Nothing here is accredited and nothing transfers. WHY IS IT CALLED THAT? ---------------------- A studiolo was a small private study — the famous ones belonged to Federico da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino, around 1476. Their walls were covered in intarsia, wood inlay arranged into a trick of perspective: cupboards standing half open with books, an hourglass, an armillary sphere inside them. None of it real; all of it flat. One of those rooms was taken apart, sold, and reassembled inside the Metropolitan Museum in New York, where you can walk into it today. It was a portrait of a mind, assembled by the person who used it. Your wall works the same way: every book you finish inlays one more object into it. DO I NEED AN ACCOUNT? --------------------- Yes, and for one reason: so a book you mark on your phone is marked on your computer, and so a year of your writing survives a lost device. Email and password only — no third-party sign-in, and nothing is shared with anyone. WHAT COSTS MONEY? ----------------- The reading is free. All of it, permanently. Grading a capstone costs money to run — it sends your writing and the shelf's full grading instrument to a large model, twice — so grading credits are sold at roughly what that costs. About thirty-one cents a capstone. Buying more does not buy a better grade, and the professor is not told what you paid. A credit is spent only when a grade is saved. If a run fails, you are not charged. HOW DOES GRADING WORK? ---------------------- Your capstone is read against that module's grading substrate — a document you never see, holding the concept inventory for every book on the shelf and the anchored rubric for that module. Four dimensions are marked: rigor, clarity, integration and insight. The professor never proposes an overall grade. The aggregate is arithmetic from a fixed weighting, computed outside the evaluation, so two people who write the same capstone receive the same result. A second pass then checks every letter against the substrate's own written anchors and may move one by a single notch, in either direction. It corrects a reader who was harsh as readily as one who was generous. GRADING IS TAKING A LONG TIME ----------------------------- A few minutes is normal — it is two passes over a long document with the model thinking between them. You can leave the screen; the run continues and the grade appears when it lands. If something goes wrong you are not charged. CAN I ADD MY OWN SHELF? ----------------------- Yes — Shelves → Commission a shelf. Studiolo writes the commission, which is the full standard a shelf has to meet to hang on this wall, including the grading instrument. You hand that to Claude and bring back what it gives you. A shelf that arrives without a grading substrate will still appear, but its capstone cannot be graded. CAN I REMOVE SHELVES I DON'T WANT? ---------------------------------- Yes, and nothing is lost — a removed shelf keeps its marks and can be added back. I MARKED A BOOK BY MISTAKE -------------------------- Open the book and choose Unmark. Your written answer is kept. HOW DO I GET MY WRITING OUT? ---------------------------- Record → Copy the commonplace book. It gathers every word you have written — marks, capstones, evaluations — into one document you can paste anywhere. HOW DO I DELETE MY ACCOUNT? --------------------------- Account → Delete this account, inside the app. It is immediate and permanent, and it destroys unspent grading credits along with everything else. The app says so before it asks you to confirm. THE CERTIFICATE --------------- Issued once you have completed at least one shelf — every book on it marked. It records what was actually read and says on its face that it is not a credential, because that is what it is. REFUNDS ------- Purchases are handled by Apple, so refunds go through Apple: reportaproblem.apple.com.
